February has been full of fun!

In February, we had a wonderful Valentine's Day party but also had a lot of fun learning new things!

To show our learning on expository text, we created dioramas.  The students then went on a gallery walk to see all the different types of expository text.

In Social Studies, we studied different landmarks around the United States.  We had fun writing about the landmarks and creating them out of play-dough!
The Alamo

The Statue of Liberty

Mount Rushmore

Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) was a big hit!
Students reading books off of Kindles and Laptops.

To become better readers, we learned how to make inferences while reading.  We really enjoyed making inferencing bags.  Students put secret items in bags and then wrote four clues about their object.  Other students had to infer what was in the bag.  We had a blast!

January - Bringing in the New Year

Whew!  The month of January flew by, but we had a lot of fun this month.

We spent a lot of time playing different math fact games - Around the World, Race to 100, and Addition Doughnut.  I have challenge every student to memorize their addition facts and on March 1st we will have an addition "competition" and we will be competing to play in the addition soccer game.

We have also become amazing authors.  We wanted to share our stories with others, so we invited Mrs. Honea's class, Mrs. Crisp, Mrs. Peterson, Mrs. Boerckel, and Mrs. Simmons to our Reading Cafe.  We decorated the tables with tablecloths and flowers.  We even had a menu.  Students read their wonderful stories to our guests.

November Fun - Field Trips, Elections, and Thanksgiving

We started November off with a bang and went on our Mad Science field trip.  The students had a blast and loved playing at the park.  They all looked great in their matching JPE shirts.

November 6th was election day for JPE 2nd graders.  Not only were our parents voting for the presidential election, but we were having our own election.  We read election books - Duck for President, My Teacher for President, and Grace for President.  Students made campaign posters, registered to vote, and then went to the polls!

I'm looking forward to all the fun things we will learn about during December.  We have started our Air and Weather unit and the class is so excited about learning about the moon and the weather. I have a class full of little astronomers!  During the first week of December, we will all turn into chefs.  We will bake "synonym" rolls, have an antonym picnic, and make fraction pizzas.  It is going to be a great month!

We Love 2nd Grade!

It's only October and we have already learned so much!  We have been working hard and having fun!

In math we've learned about numbers to 999, patterns in a hundreds chart, number lines, time to the five minutes, fact families, and bar graphs.  To help us learn these concepts we have been playing games, working with partners, using manipulatives, and incorporating technology.

In science we have our very own fish tanks!  We have loved observing fish and snails in a habitat.  We have wrote our observations in our scientific notebooks and have really learned a lot about animals.

We are really enjoying Daily 5 and Writer's Workshop.  We have been writing and reading everyday and have learned about fiction, nonfiction, and realistic fiction.

Summer is Here!

The last week of school was a blast!  We read under the stars, played board games, cleaned with shaving cream, and had a dance off.
