Plants! Plants! Plants!

We are learning a lot about plants and loving every minute of it!!  We began our plant unit with a pre-assessment.  Students were able to show me what they already knew about plants.

Next, we created a class KWL chart.

We planted brassica and learned about the parts of a plant and their jobs.

We soaked lima beans and learned about the parts of a seed.  We also planted lima beans to learn about what plants need.

Plural Nouns

We learned how to correctly use plural nouns in speech and writing.  Students created plural flip books, worked with partners to write plural poems, and presented the poems to the class.

Fables

This week, we finished our unit on fables.  We read many fables, discussed the elements, and did reader's response in our writing journals.  We had fun deciding on the moral of each fable and then connecting that moral to our own lives.

Math Fact Fun

To practice our math facts, we went outside and played a fun game with Easter eggs.  Students worked in pairs to solve the math problem inside the egg.  It was a great way to review our facts, get outside, and get our bodies moving.

In the Garden...

From seed to our plate - We have been working hard in the garden and it is time to start harvesting some of the vegetables that we have grown.  Students picked, cleaned, and cut all different vegetables.  Then we mixed them all together and enjoyed a wonderful salad.

Basic Needs

We had a lot of fun learning about basic needs.  We began our unit by making a chart of needs and wants.  We discussed if certain things were really a need or just a want.

To incorporate technology, students completed a wants vs. needs activity on Kidspiration.   They really enjoy working on the laptops!

We began talking about how every person has the same basic needs but the way they meet those needs can differ depending on where they live.  We looked at a globe and researched information on people living in warm regions, hot regions, and cold regions.  We added this information to our I Can Notebooks.

Students then created a "Guess Where I Live?" flip book.

Review Week

This past week was the last week of the 3rd nine weeks.  It's hard to believe!!  So, we spent the week finishing up assessments and finding fun ways to review all the things we have learned.

For Math, we spent Monday playing math games and then worked in groups to create our own math games on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Students created games about time, coins, addition, and subtraction.  On Friday, students were able to rotate through and play all the games.  We had a blast and it was a great way to apply their knowledge.

To review our spelling words, we created a super spelling board.  Students were able to choose what activity they wanted to do to practice the 1st grade spelling words.  They had so much that we decided to put the super spelling board in our word work station this week.

We were also able to go outside to the garden this week where we planted tomato plants and different flower seeds.  We made observations and checked on our compost bin.
