In the Garden

We visited the garden today to learn about measurement.  We talked about all the different things we could measure in the garden.  While we were there, we noticed some radishes and carrots growing outside of the vegetable bed.  So...we decided to build a barrier and create our own vegetable garden.  The class was so excited and had so much fun!!

We also got to see Lathan Luke in the garden today!

It was windy in the garden today, but we still had fun and learned a lot.  We made observations, checked the temperature, and learned how butterflies communicate and smell.

We made observations about things we noticed in the garden.

We played an insect game where we had to find our partners using only our sense of smell.

Valentine's Day

Our Valentine's Day party was a huge hit!  We loved going to each of the four stations: cookie decorating, making a craft, opening our Valentine's Day cards, and Valentine's bingo.  A BIG thank you to all of our wonderful parent volunteers.

I love my class!

Butterflies

We released the butterflies into the garden!

We are having so much fun watching our caterpillars grow and change!

Our caterpillars have changed into chrysalises!

Technical Drawing in a Scientific Notebook

We are patiently waiting for our butterflies to emerge! We have put sugar water and orange slices in the butterfly net.

We predicted how many more days it would take for our butterflies to emerge.  Then, we created a bar graph showing our predictions.

The butterflies have emerged!!

After the butterflies emerged, we did an activity on the life cycle of a butterfly.

We released the butterflies into the school garden.  The class was very excited to see them fly around and we decided we will be on the look out for eggs.

Fairy Tales

Fairy Tales in First Grade
Fairy Tale Story Map

Cinderella - reader's response

Jack and the Beanstalk - math integration - We used non-standard units of measurement to measure and create the giant.

The Frog Prince - character study - We described the characters and the reasons for their actions.  We loved making the frogs!

The Princess and the Pea - We retold the story with a flip book.

Fairy Tale Portfolios - On the front, we made a fairy tale element wheel.  On the back,  we wrote our own fairy tales.  Then, we place all of the wonderful things that we made in our portfolios.

Welcome to our 1st grade class blog!  We are so excited to share what we are doing in class and all of the wonderful things that we are learning.
